M3 MacBook Air

In 2022, Apple introduced the redesigned MacBook Air with a thinner chassis, a larger display with slimmer bezels, and the return of MagSafe. The new color options were Starlight and Midnight, alongside the classic Silver and Space Gray (the Gold finish was discontinued). This fresh design debuted with the M2 chip and has remained the current model line.

15‑inch models with the M3 chip

The 15‑inch model is an excellent choice if you want more unified memory than most users need, which can be especially valuable for heavy multitasking.

M4 MacBook Air

Last March, Apple announced a refreshed MacBook Air with M4 chip. The new model is largely the same as its predecessor, but it adds a Center Stage webcam and a fresh Sky Blue finish that replaces the former Space Gray option.

M4 MacBook Pro

Apple refreshed the MacBook Pro in 2021 with a mini‑LED display, ProMotion, more ports (HDMI and SD‑card reader), larger batteries, better thermals, and a 1080p webcam for the first time.

Although the MacBook Pro isn’t as inexpensive as the MacBook Air models listed elsewhere, it offers an outstanding display and extra connectivity. Below are some current deals (note that a newer M5 chip is available for base‑model configurations).

14‑inch models

Tip: Apple may announce M5 Pro and M5 Max‑based MacBook Pros as early as this spring. If you want the absolute top‑tier performance, consider waiting. Otherwise, the M4 Pro and M4 Max models provide excellent performance at a discount—especially worthwhile before potential RAM price hikes.

M5 MacBook Pro (14‑inch)

Last October, Apple unveiled the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M5 chip (Amazon link). Unlike previous releases, Apple offered only the base‑M5 configuration. If you need more performance—or a 16‑inch model—you’ll have to opt for an M4 Pro or M4 Max chip.

• The M5 is roughly 15 % faster across the board compared to the M4 (9to5Mac analysis).
• Against the M4 Pro, the M5 is about 10 % slower in CPU performance.
• GPU‑wise, it rivals the M2 Pro and M3 Pro, making the M5 a solid value‑option versus an M4 Pro model.
