Overview
Smartphone longevity has improved. Yearly releases now bring only minor upgrades, and manufacturers such as Google and Samsung provide software support for up to a decade.
Poll Methodology
We asked Android Authority readers how long they keep their Android devices, offering three options:
- One to three years
- Three to five years
- Five years or longer
The poll can be viewed in full here.
Results
- 44 % chose “3 to 5 years.”
- 29 % said they keep their phones for “5 years or longer.”
- 27 % upgrade every “1 to 3 years.”
These figures show that roughly three‑quarters of respondents keep their Android phones for at least three years, with a notable portion holding onto devices for five years or more.
Interpretation
- Cost and slow progress: Phones are expensive, and hardware improvements have slowed, making longer upgrade cycles more appealing.
- Extended software support: Pixel and Galaxy devices now receive up to seven years of updates, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
- Consumer sentiment: Even enthusiasts are comfortable retaining models like the Galaxy S21 and Pixel 6 for extended periods.
