TL;DR
- Google Drive shows early evidence of work on a new account‑switching interface.
- Functionality remains identical, but the new UI is much more compact.
- The change could reduce excess scrolling in apps that display a lot of content on this screen.
Background
For users who juggle multiple Google accounts—whether for work, school, or personal reasons—Android apps have traditionally made it easy to switch between accounts. Tapping the user icon in apps such as Gmail or Drive opens a consistent account‑switcher that lets you change accounts, manage them, or add new ones.
New Layout Preview
While testing Google Drive’s version 2.26.217.9.all.alldpi, we discovered an early implementation of a redesigned account‑switcher screen.
- The new design is tighter: the friendly salutation is removed, the user photo is smaller, and both the photo and email are combined into a collapsible element.
- The “Manage your Google account” button is moved below the other options.
- The explicit “Switch account” label disappears.
Photo‑edit Icon Change
The icon for changing the profile picture switches from a camera to a pencil.
- Camera icon (current) – opens the direct photo‑change screen.
- Pencil icon (new) – navigates to the full Google account personal‑info page.
Why the Change?
Although Drive has ample space, other apps like the Play Store and Gemini are more crowded. Reducing the vertical footprint of the account switcher can lessen the need for scrolling, making it easier to locate the desired option.
Potential Rollout
Although the first glimpse comes from Drive, it’s likely Google will apply the same redesign across its Android app ecosystem once the change is finalized. Users may need a brief adjustment period, but the overall direction appears positive.
⚠️ An APK teardown can hint at upcoming features, but there’s no guarantee they will reach a public release.
