New Compact Opal Nugget Ice Makers

GE showcased prototypes of its new compact nugget ice makers at the KBIS trade show.

The company announced two new versions of its popular Opal nugget‑ice machines that have smaller footprints, take up less counter space, and come with more affordable price tags. Like the larger and pricier Opal 2.0 Ultra, these new models produce nugget ice—also known as chewable ice or pellet ice—by freezing layers of ice flakes that form nuggets with more surface area, allowing drinks to chill faster.

Background

  • Original Opal (2015): First home‑use nugget‑ice machine released by GE, previously only available in restaurants.
  • Opal 2.0 Ultra: Recent high‑end model with a starting price of $579.

New Models

  • GE Profile Opal Mini: A smaller, countertop‑friendly version.
  • Second Compact Model: (Name not specified) offers similar functionality with a reduced footprint.

Both models retain the core nugget‑ice technology while being easier to fit into typical kitchen spaces and priced lower than the Ultra version.
