Overview

Finding someone in a busy airport, a crowded arena, or a downtown street is about to get a lot easier for Android users. Google Messages has added a real‑time location‑sharing feature that lets you share your current location in a text message.

The feature was first spotted by 9to5Google earlier this week, and it appears to be rolling out on a larger scale.

Google Messages already had a location‑sharing feature, but it only dropped a static pin on a map. The new option updates your location as you move, making it much easier to connect with someone on the go. The “Find My” app offers a similar capability, but this method lets you share your location without leaving Google Messages. You can share with a single contact or with a group.

Key takeaways

  • Google Messages now lets you share your location in real time.
  • You can choose how long you want to share where you are.
  • The old location‑sharing option was only for a static point.

How to share your real‑time location with Google Messages

  1. Open a conversation in Google Messages.
  2. Tap the attachment (paperclip) icon at the bottom left.
  3. Choose Location – you’ll now see two options: Real‑time location and One‑time location.
  4. If prompted, grant location permissions. This is required only the first time you use the feature.
  5. Select Real‑time location.
  6. Choose how long you want to share your location:
    • 1 hour
    • Today only (ends at midnight)
    • Until you turn it off
    • Custom time (up to 24 hours)
  7. Send the location. You can stop sharing at any time from the same menu.
