TL;DR
- The Now Playing app is now available on the Google Play Store.
- It identifies music playing around you directly from the lock screen.
- You can view and listen to your identification history on your preferred music service.
Standalone Now Playing app launches
Pixel phones have long included the Now Playing feature, which automatically recognizes music playing nearby. After being bundled within Android System Intelligence, Google has released it as a separate app on the Google Play Store.
How the app works
- The app continues to identify music automatically on the lock screen.
- Opening the app presents a hub with a central icon; tapping it reveals the currently playing track.
- A Now Playing history section lets you view, manage, and listen to previously identified songs via your favorite music services.
- Google has added Day and Time filters to help you search your history.
Initial access issues
When first trying to open the app, contributor AssembleDebug encountered a dialog stating that an automatic update was required, advising to “Check back in a few hours.” Despite this, AssembleDebug could still reach the app’s settings page.
Telegram user @Diablo0090 shared screenshots showing the app’s interface and confirming the presence of the new filters.
