Motorola announces partnership with GrapheneOS

Following rumors swirling for quite some time, Motorola has announced a partnership with GrapheneOS that will see the privacy‑focused, de‑Googled version of Android pre‑installed on upcoming Motorola devices.
A new “long‑term partnership” between Motorola and GrapheneOS was announced at MWC 2026 today, with plans for both a future smartphone to have GrapheneOS pre‑installed and certain features from GrapheneOS coming to other Motorola devices, the company said in a media briefing in Barcelona.
Press release
Motorola is introducing a new era of smartphone security through a long‑term partnership with the GrapheneOS Foundation, the leading nonprofit in advanced mobile security and creators of a hardened, operating system based on the Android Open Source Project. Together, Motorola and the GrapheneOS Foundation will work to strengthen smartphone security and collaborate on future devices engineered with GrapheneOS compatibility.
…In the coming months, Motorola and the GrapheneOS Foundation will continue to collaborate on joint research, software enhancements, and new security capabilities, with more details and solutions to roll out as the partnership evolves.
What we know so far
- It’s unclear which GrapheneOS features Motorola will bring over to its existing lineup.
- The device that will ship with GrapheneOS pre‑installed is a future release; no specific model has been identified.
- GrapheneOS developers have previously noted that current Motorola devices do not meet the OS’s hardware requirements.
As of today, GrapheneOS is exclusively available on Google Pixel devices. Whatever device Motorola is building with GrapheneOS, it will need to exceed the specifications of the Motorola Signature—currently the brand’s flagship—which also does not meet the required hardware criteria.
