Toyota and Pony.ai start mass producing robotaxis for China

Overview

The first Pony.ai bZ4X robotaxi, produced in partnership with Toyota, has rolled off the production line and is ready for deployment. The companies aim to produce more than 1,000 bZ4X robotaxis this year.

Vehicle Details

• Model: Toyota bZ4X (autonomous version)
• Autonomous System: Pony.ai’s Gen‑7, featuring Bluetooth‑based automatic vehicle unlocking, in‑cabin voice interaction, integrated online music services, and braking patterns designed to reduce motion sickness.
• Deployment Plan: The bZ4X will be gradually integrated into Pony.ai’s fleet alongside two other autonomous vehicle models already used for ride‑hailing in Tier 1 Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai.

Pony.ai’s goal is to operate 3,000 autonomous vehicles by the end of 2026.

Company Background

• Toyota: Introduced the non‑autonomous bZ4X to the public last year.
• Pony.ai: Founded in 2016, with headquarters in Silicon Valley and operations in China. It received permission from Beijing to offer self‑driving car services to the public in 2022 and filed for a U.S. IPO in 2024.
