SCOTUS rules Trump’s tariffs are illegal — but the fight is far from over

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down some of Donald Trump’s tariffs on foreign imports, a hallmark of the chaotic second Trump administration. The ruling specifically addresses duties imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a law no other president has used for tariffs. Enacted in 1977, IEEPA was originally intended to limit presidential authority to declare national emergencies only when threats originated outside the United States. The legality of employing IEEPA to levy tariffs has been questioned since the taxes were announced last year.
