Rivian’s Stance on CarPlay
On the latest episode of The Verge’s Decoder podcast, Rivian’s software chief Wassym Bensaid explained why the EV maker still refuses to offer Apple CarPlay.
“The challenge with screen‑mirroring solutions is that they take over every single pixel in the car,” Bensaid said.
Rivian prefers to provide its own interface with end‑to‑end integration rather than allowing an external system to dominate the infotainment experience.
AI Integration Vision
Bensaid added that deep AI integration into the vehicle will eventually make the CarPlay debate “completely obsolete.” He envisions Rivian owners accessing the core functionality of many apps through an AI agent, eliminating the need for CarPlay or Android Auto.
“I really believe that the way you interact with apps—mono‑threaded, single buttons, single icons—will be reshaped into a world where an agentic integration presents a wholesome user experience,” he explained.
He cautioned, however, that developing an AI agent as an “alternative solution” to CarPlay will take time to materialize.
Shifting Customer Interest
According to Bensaid, Rivian’s internal statistics show a dramatic shift in customer preferences:
- ~70 % of customers wanted CarPlay when the vehicles first launched (about five years ago).
- A recent survey indicates that figure has dropped to under 25 %.
