Announcement

OpenAI and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced a multi‑year strategic partnership to accelerate AI innovation for enterprises, startups, and end consumers worldwide. Amazon will invest $50 billion in OpenAI, starting with an initial $15 billion and followed by an additional $35 billion in the coming months once certain conditions are met.

Partnership Details

  • Stateful Runtime Environment – Co‑created by AWS and OpenAI, powered by OpenAI models and available through Amazon Bedrock for AWS customers to build generative AI applications and agents at production scale.
  • OpenAI Frontier – AWS will be the exclusive third‑party cloud distribution provider, enabling organizations to build, deploy, and manage teams of AI agents.
  • Compute Commitment – OpenAI will consume 2 GW of Trainium capacity via AWS infrastructure to support the Stateful Runtime Environment, Frontier, and other advanced workloads.
  • Customized Models – OpenAI and Amazon will develop tailored models for Amazon’s customer‑facing applications, complementing existing models such as Amazon’s Nova family.

Stateful Runtime Environment

Stateful developer environments represent the next generation of how frontier models are used, allowing seamless access to compute, memory, and identity. Key capabilities include:

  • Retaining context and remembering prior work.
  • Interacting with software tools, data sources, and compute resources across ongoing projects and workflows.
  • Optimized training to run on AWS infrastructure and integration with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and other AWS services.

The environment is expected to launch within the next few months.

OpenAI Frontier

Frontier expands access to OpenAI’s most advanced enterprise platform, enabling:

  • Building, deploying, and managing teams of AI agents that operate across real business systems.
  • Shared context, built‑in governance, and enterprise‑grade security without managing underlying infrastructure.
  • Rapid integration of powerful AI into existing workflows, supporting production‑scale AI deployments across industries.

Expanded AWS‑OpenAI Agreement

OpenAI and AWS are expanding their existing $38 billion multi‑year agreement by $100 billion over eight years. Highlights:

  • Commitment to consume ~2 GW of Trainium capacity (both Trainium 3 and next‑generation Trainium 4).
  • Lowered costs and improved efficiency for producing intelligence at scale.
  • Long‑term capacity guarantees while deploying purpose‑built silicon alongside AWS’s broader compute ecosystem.

Trainium 4, slated for delivery in 2027, will deliver:

  • Significantly higher FP4 compute performance.
  • Expanded memory bandwidth and increased high‑bandwidth memory capacity.
  • Enhanced support for increasingly capable AI systems at scale.

Customized Models for Amazon

OpenAI and Amazon will collaborate to create models tailored for Amazon developers, powering customer‑facing applications and AI agents. These models will complement Amazon’s existing offerings, such as the Nova family, providing additional tools for teams to build and deliver AI solutions at scale.
