Nintendo's Virtual Boy app is now available to download

Overview
Nintendo’s Virtual Boy app is now available to download on the Switch and Switch 2 as part of the Nintendo Classics lineup. Access requires a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Unlike Nintendo’s other retro emulators, this service also needs a dedicated accessory.
The original Virtual Boy, released in 1995, was a portable tabletop system and the first console capable of stereoscopic 3D graphics. It used a facemask with a monochrome red display mounted on a bipod, requiring players to push their faces toward the screen rather than wear it like a modern VR headset.
“Once you enter the third dimension, there’s no going back… #VirtualBoy – Nintendo Classics is available now on #NintendoSwitch2 and #NintendoSwitch, as part of #NintendoSwitchOnline + Expansion Pack!” – Nintendo UK, Feb 17 2026
Hardware Requirements
- Virtual Boy add‑on – a near‑perfect replica of the original console, but with a slot for sliding in a Switch or Switch 2. This version is wireless.
- Cardboard version – a $25 budget alternative (the old Labo VR headset is not compatible).
Both accessories are sold through the My Nintendo Store.
