Microsoft’s new guidance for gaming RAM
Microsoft recently published a support document for gaming on Windows, outlining the hardware that should be chosen in 2026. The document recommended 16 GB of RAM as the “practical starting point” and suggested 32 GB for a future‑proof configuration. The post was deleted a day after publication, but the recommendation signals that 32 GB is no longer considered overkill by the Windows maker.
Hardware trends supporting the recommendation
Recent hardware trends back up Microsoft’s advice. A September 2025 Steam Survey showed that 16 GB configurations were losing popularity while 32 GB systems were gaining traction. Although 16 GB remains more common overall, the shift toward larger memory capacities is evident.
Reasoning behind the 32 GB recommendation
Microsoft explains that more RAM helps when running applications such as Discord alongside a game, and that AAA titles benefit from the extra breathing room. Additional memory reduces reliance on the page file— which is much slower— allowing more data to stay in RAM and improving overall performance.
