Overview

Thanks to Apple’s Sound Recognition feature, the HomePod mini and second‑generation HomePod can send you notifications when they recognize the sound of a smoke or carbon‑monoxide alarm. This can be useful if you don’t have a dedicated smart detector, but Apple cautions that the feature should not be relied upon in situations where users may be harmed or injured, or in high‑risk or emergency scenarios.

How Sound Recognition Works

When Sound Recognition is enabled, HomePod listens for the distinct acoustic pattern of a smoke or CO alarm. If it detects one, it alerts you by sending a notification to your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. If your Home system includes a compatible smart camera, the Home app can also display live video of the area where the alarm sounded, letting you see what’s happening in real time.

Enabling Sound Recognition on HomePod

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the ellipsis button (⋯) in the top‑right corner.
  3. Select Home Settings.
  4. Choose Safety & Security → Sound Recognition.
  5. Under Sounds, toggle Smoke & CO Alarm to the ON (green) position.
  6. Turn on the switches next to the HomePod devices you want to enable Sound Recognition for.

Note: You can also access the Sound Recognition menu from the Home app’s menu cards for individual HomePods.

Limitations

  • The feature was introduced on iPhone in 2020 and can detect many sounds (doorbell, running water, baby crying, car horn, door knock, cat meowing, dog barking, etc.), but it is not a substitute for a dedicated smart smoke/CO detector.
  • Apple’s warning emphasizes that Sound Recognition should not be the sole safety measure in high‑risk or emergency situations.

Background

The updated Home app architecture that supports this feature was introduced in 2022 as part of iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4.
