Lamborghini abandons all‑electric supercar plans
Lamborghini has scrapped the production version of the Lanzador EV concept, which had been slated for a 2029 launch. The decision was confirmed by Stephen Winkelmann, chairman and CEO of Lamborghini, in an interview with The Sunday Times.
Decision
- The company will not move forward with the all‑electric Lanzador.
- The verdict to cancel the project was made late last year, with this interview providing the first public confirmation.
Reasoning
- Winkelmann said there was “close to zero” interest from Lamborghini’s customer base for battery‑powered EVs.
- He added that “EVs, in their current form, struggle to deliver this specific emotional connection,” noting that the lack of the brand’s characteristic noise may have contributed to the low demand.
Future direction
- Lamborghini will replace the Lanzador with another plug‑in hybrid electric vehicle, similar to its Reveulto and the Urus.
- The entire Lamborghini lineup is expected to be hybrid EVs by 2030, while internal combustion engines will continue “for as long as possible.”
- The CEO hinted that an all‑electric Lamborghini could be considered “only when the time is right” in the future.
