TL;DR

  • Google Translate is getting an update that offers helpful alternatives to phrases, idioms, and colloquialisms.
  • Tapping on Understand provides a detailed overview, and the Ask button lets you ask follow‑up questions.
  • The update is rolling out today for users in the US and India.

New idiom‑suggestion feature

Every language has common sayings—break a leg, bite the bullet, beat around the bush—that may not translate well for speakers of other languages. Google’s latest update to the Translate app helps you find the right idioms and colloquialisms for a given context.

Through an update that’s rolling out today, the app will start offering a list of alternative expressions with the help of Gemini. When you tap the arrow on the right side of a translation, you’ll see tips on when and why to use a different expression.

“Understand” and “Ask” buttons

  • Understand – Provides a detailed overview of the translation, answering common questions about usage and nuance.
  • Ask – Lets you pose follow‑up questions if you need more clarification about a phrase or its alternatives.

Availability

The feature is currently available for Google Translate users in the United States and India on both Android and iOS. Google says the experience will also arrive on the web soon, though no timeline has been announced for other countries.
