Update (June 4)
Nearly a month after it first appeared, the Material 3 Expressive redesign of the Google Tasks widget is now rolling out widely. Ensure you’re on version 2026.05.25.x of the app (Google Play Store). If the updated widget isn’t visible, try force‑stopping Tasks from the App info screen.
This update follows the new gradient icon rollout and coincides with the iOS app gaining iOS 26 support. The primary visual change is the “plus” button in the top‑right corner, now placed in a pill‑shaped container (similar to the Gmail and Google Drive widgets). The button’s background is themed, making it stand out more.
Original tweak (May 6)
The redesign began with the pill‑shaped “plus” button, mirroring the style used in the Gmail and Google Drive widgets. The background of this button adapts to the current theme.
Old vs. new
- Dark mode: The widget now uses proper Dynamic Color theming, allowing it to blend better with your homescreen.
- Light mode: No significant visual changes.
Rollout details
The redesign is delivered via a server‑side update with version 2026.04.27.x of Google Tasks for Android. At the time of writing, it was still limited to a few devices.
Google Tasks hasn’t seen major updates in recent months, though a new icon has been reported as forthcoming.
