TL;DR

  • Google is quietly fixing an issue with automatic Do Not Disturb (DND) using Driving mode.
  • The feature now revives the option to turn on DND only when the phone is connected to the car’s head unit via Bluetooth.
  • Previously, the mode could misfire for passengers when their phones detected motion.

What Driving mode does

Android’s Driving mode suppresses notifications while you’re behind the wheel. It can be triggered in three ways:

  1. Bluetooth connection to the car’s head unit.
  2. Motion detection using the phone’s sensors.
  3. Both Bluetooth and motion detection together.

When enabled, the mode automatically activates when it thinks you’re driving, helping you stay focused and safe.

The problem with the previous implementation

In recent Android releases, Google removed the Bluetooth‑only trigger. As a result, Driving mode would often activate whenever the phone sensed motion, even if it wasn’t connected to the vehicle. This caused:

  • Missed calls and notifications for passengers.
  • Unnecessary DND activation when the device was simply being moved (e.g., in a bag).

What’s changed

Google has quietly re‑added the Bluetooth‑only option. The new setting lets the phone turn on Driving mode only when it’s paired with the car’s Bluetooth. Early observations show the option appearing on a range of Android devices, including non‑Pixel phones such as the OnePlus 13R. Pixel devices display the setting using the Material 3 Expressive UI, but the underlying functionality is the same across manufacturers.

Note: The description mentions “vehicle Bluetooth.” It’s unclear whether older or aftermarket head units might encounter compatibility issues.

Samsung’s Android Auto implementation already offers a similar “only when connected via Android Auto” toggle, which could be a useful reference for future Android updates.

The change is available in Google Play Services version 26.05.32. You can verify and update the app from its Google Play Store page.

How to enable the Bluetooth‑only Driving mode

  1. Open SettingsModesDriving.
  2. Turn on the While driving toggle.
  3. Tap the toggle again to select “When connected to vehicle Bluetooth” (or the equivalent wording on your device).

Looking ahead

Google is also experimenting with a commute mode that could automatically enable features to reduce motion sickness. While still in development, a preview may appear in the upcoming Android 17 beta (details here).
