Google Maps looks different for some users in big change
Source: Mashable Tech
Google Maps appears to have rolled out a change that alters the user experience depending on whether you are signed into a Google account.
Change Overview
A report from 9to5Google notes that users who are not logged in now see a “limited view” version of Maps. This version omits several key features, such as:
- Displays of nearby businesses
- Detailed information on nearby attractions
- User reviews, busiest hours, and dine‑in/take‑out status for restaurants
In the limited view, clicking on a restaurant no longer opens the side panel with the usual details.
User Reports
Reddit users have posted about the issue, observing that the stripped‑back interface appears only when they are signed out. One discussion can be found here.
Possible Explanations
Tom’s Guide reported that some users encountered an error message suggesting the problem might be caused by:
- Network issues
- A Chrome extension
- Other local problems
The error message advises logging in to resolve the issue. However, Tom’s Guide also noted that they experienced the limited view without any error message while logged out.
