Apple’s first foldable iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone Ultra, is shaping up to launch with a noticeably restrained selection of colors. Multiple leakers point to as few as two options, with a deliberate avoidance of bold or vibrant finishes.

Color Options

  • In February, the Weibo leaker “Instant Digital” described the foldable iPhone with just two color options, confirming white as one of them while keeping the second option undisclosed.
  • The leaker revisited the report earlier this month without changing the two‑option narrative.
  • More recently, Macworld cited a supply‑chain source that the device will be offered in classic silver, white, and an indigo shade similar to the iPhone 17 Pro’s Deep Blue finish. The source emphasized that the lineup will have fewer choices than the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models, with no bold or vibrant colors.

Historical Comparison

The limited palette mirrors the launch strategy of the iPhone X, which debuted in November 2017 with only Silver and Space Gray at a starting price of $999. Like the foldable iPhone, the iPhone X represented a generational leap and a new design language. The subsequent iPhone XS added a Gold option, suggesting Apple may expand the iPhone Ultra’s color range over time.

Production Constraints

Supply‑chain analyst Ming‑Chi Kuo warned that early‑stage yield and ramp‑up challenges could delay smooth shipments until 2027, with potential shortages persisting through at least the end of 2026. Kuo clarified that the often‑cited order figure of 15–20 million foldable iPhones likely reflects cumulative demand across a two‑ to three‑year lifecycle, not just 2026, indicating modest annual volumes.

Adding each new color variant increases manufacturing complexity, cost, and SKU inventory. With the device expected to be in short supply at launch, there is little commercial incentive for Apple to broaden the initial color palette.

Pricing and Launch Timeline

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the iPhone Ultra’s starting price will “cross the $2,000 threshold,” positioning it beyond the price range of buyers who might be swayed by a wider color selection. The iPhone Ultra is expected to be announced in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
