Overview

Apple’s iOS 26.5 release begins rolling out beta support for end‑to‑end encrypted RCS messaging. This adds secure cross‑platform messaging between iPhone and Android devices.

Requirements

  • iPhone: Must be running iOS 26.5 and connected to a wireless network that supports encrypted RCS. A list of compatible networks is available on Apple’s support page. In the United States, AT&T, T‑Mobile, and Verizon support the protocol from day one.
  • Android: The recipient needs the latest version of Google Messages on a device that is also on a compatible network.

Identifying Secure Chats

On an iPhone, a new lock icon appears at the top of RCS conversations when encryption is active. Apple states that “encryption is on by default and will be automatically enabled over time for new and existing RCS conversations.”
Messages between Apple devices will continue to use the iMessage protocol.

Other iOS 26.5 Updates

  • iPadOS, macOS Tahoe, and watchOS also received version 26.5 updates.
  • Maps: Introduces “suggested places,” highlighting locations based on recent searches and trending nearby spots.
  • Wallpapers: A new Pride‑themed “Luminance” wallpaper is available (source).

Impact and Outlook

The rollout effectively ends the long‑standing RCS compatibility issue, allowing iOS and Android users to chat securely without third‑party apps like Signal or WhatsApp. While some quirks may remain, the move follows pressure from industry campaigns and regulators (Engadget, Engadget on Apple’s RCS ad, Daring Fireball).
