In an interview with Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, Eddy Cue emphasized Brazil’s growing role in Apple TV’s global business, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to theatrical releases, and commented on Netflix’s attempt to acquire Warner Bros. Here are the details.
Cue says Apple remains commited to theatrical releases
Earlier this month, Apple hosted an Apple TV media event, where it announced multiple new original TV shows and movies coming to its streaming service throughout 2026.
At the same event, Apple SVP of Services Eddy Cue spoke with several media outlets, including Brazil’s Folha de S. Paulo, which published his interview.
In it, Cue says Brazil is Apple TV’s second‑largest and fastest‑growing market in terms of subscribers. He adds that Apple is closely watching proposed streaming regulations in the country that could require national content quotas:
“It doesn’t move as quickly as I’d like, especially if you want to be really good, but we’ll get there. I know Brazilians want quality, I appreciate that, and I also know there’s a lot of opportunity in Brazil to create great content, […] but we have nothing to announce right now.”
Cue also said Apple remains committed to theatrical releases through partnerships with traditional distributors. Although he recognized that “the bar for leaving home and going to the movie theater” is getting increasingly higher, he emphasized:
“But there’s no substitute for that experience, watching a film collectively, going on a date at the movies, spending the evening with friends or your kids seeing a film. It’s something truly unique, and I believe it will become even more valuable over time.”
Netflix–Warner merger comments
Cue commented on how a potential Netflix–Warner deal could affect Apple, which has partnered with Warner on films including F1: The Movie. He said:
“We have a great relationship with the Netflix team, I’ve known them for a long time, and the same is true of our relationship with Warner. They are publicly talking about releasing films in theaters and I know Ted (Sarandos) very well. Well enough to believe we will continue working together in the future.”
Earlier today, Apple announced that it has partnered with Netflix in the US to make the entire new season of Formula 1: Drive to Survive available on Apple TV.
Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month and features hit shows and movies such as F1 The Movie, Pluribus, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking and Silo.
