Most AI tools give you instant answers, but speed isn’t always ideal. Claude’s Extended Thinking mode slows down and works through complex problems step‑by‑step—like a thoughtful expert rather than a quick guesser.

• Standard AI – blurts out an answer based on patterns.
• Extended Thinking – pauses, reads nuance, checks for errors, then responds.

How to Activate Extended Thinking

1. Switch the model setting to “Extended.”
2. Or toggle the “Thinking” button (available in Claude 3.7 Sonnet and above) before sending your message.

You don’t need this for a simple “Thank You” email; reserve the extra “brain power” for tasks that demand depth and accuracy.

Ideal Use Cases

Deep Analysis

• Summarizing 100+‑page legal or technical documents.

High Accuracy

• Generating timestamps for long‑form video (4+ hours).

Logic & Math

• Analyzing business data or complex coding bugs.

Strategic Planning

• Creating multi‑step project roadmaps.

Example: Timestamping a 5‑Hour Video

1. Scan the entire transcript for context.
2. Identify natural chapter breaks (not just random intervals).
3. Cross‑reference mentions of specific keywords.

When Extended Thinking is active, a “Thinking” dropdown appears. Clicking it reveals Claude’s internal monologue in real time, e.g.:
