🧠 The Power of ā€œSlowā€ AI

Most AI tools give you instant answers, but speed isn’t always ideal. Claude’s Extended Thinking mode slows down and works through complex problems step‑by‑step—like a thoughtful expert rather than a quick guesser.

  • Standard AI – blurts out an answer based on patterns.
  • Extended Thinking – pauses, reads nuance, checks for errors, then responds.

How to Activate Extended Thinking

  1. Switch the model setting to ā€œExtended.ā€
  2. Or toggle the ā€œThinkingā€ button (available in Claude 3.7 Sonnet and above) before sending your message.

You don’t need this for a simple ā€œThank Youā€ email; reserve the extra ā€œbrain powerā€ for tasks that demand depth and accuracy.

Ideal Use Cases

TaskRecommended Mode
Quick email / text fixStandard (Fast)
Brainstorming ideasStandard (Creative)
Complex coding / debuggingExtended (Precise)
Data extraction from PDFsExtended (Thorough)

Deep Analysis

  • Summarizing 100+‑page legal or technical documents.

High Accuracy

  • Generating timestamps for long‑form video (4+ hours).

Logic & Math

  • Analyzing business data or complex coding bugs.

Strategic Planning

  • Creating multi‑step project roadmaps.

Example: Timestamping a 5‑Hour Video

  1. Scan the entire transcript for context.
  2. Identify natural chapter breaks (not just random intervals).
  3. Cross‑reference mentions of specific keywords.
  4. Format a clean list, e.g., 0:00 – Intro, 15:30 – The Secret Sauce, ….

Result: About 90 % of the work is completed in minutes, leaving only a final review.

When Extended Thinking is active, a ā€œThinkingā€ dropdown appears. Clicking it reveals Claude’s internal monologue in real time, e.g.:

ā€œI need to verify if the user wants the timestamps in 10‑minute incrementsā€¦ā€ →
ā€œScanning the section on ā€˜Market Trendsā€™ā€¦ā€ →
ā€œEnsuring the tone matches the previous chaptersā€¦ā€

This transparency builds trust—you can see exactly why Claude provides a particular answer.

When to Use Extended Thinking

Extended Thinking is Claude’s Reasoning Mode. Use it when accuracy matters more than speed. It’s often better to wait 30 seconds for a perfect answer than to spend minutes fixing a fast, incorrect one.
