ChatGPT Now Has Ads for Free and Go Tier Users
Source: MacRumors
Overview
U.S. ChatGPT users with a free account or a low‑cost Go subscription will start seeing ads as of today, according to OpenAI.
Ads Implementation
- Eligibility – Ads are limited to the Free and Go tiers and are shown only to logged‑in adult users.
- Content separation – Ads are clearly labeled as sponsored and displayed separately from ChatGPT’s answers.
- Targeting – By default, ads are based on the conversation topic, past chats, and prior ad interactions (e.g., a recipe discussion may surface ads for meal kits or grocery delivery).
- Sensitive topics – No ads will appear for health, mental‑health, or political subjects.
User Options
- Upgrade – Users who do not want ads can upgrade to a Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Education plan.
- Opt‑out – An opt‑out option is available in exchange for fewer daily free messages.
- Control – Users can dismiss ads, provide feedback, view why a specific ad was shown, delete ad data, and disable personalization.
Advertiser Information
- Advertisers receive only aggregate metrics such as the number of views or clicks.
- They do not get access to chat history, memories, or personal user information.
Funding Rationale
OpenAI is not yet profitable, and the free and Go tiers require “significant infrastructure and ongoing investment.” Ads are introduced to help fund this work.
Competitive Response
Anthropic’s Claude chatbot remains ad‑free. The company aired an anti‑ad commercial during the Super Bowl, criticizing OpenAI’s plan and stating that a “conversation with Claude” is not the right place for ads.
