Apple's Foldable iPad Still In the Works, Could Arrive by 2029
Source: MacRumors
Overview
Apple is still developing a large foldable iPad, despite encountering several technical hurdles, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. In his Power On newsletter, Gurman describes the “gigantic” foldable iPad as a device that could blur the line between the Mac and iPad product lines.
Timeline
- Initial target: Apple had previously aimed to launch the device in 2028.
- Current outlook: Ongoing issues with weight and display technology are expected to push the launch back to 2029.
Pricing
A large foldable OLED display would be significantly more expensive than current iPad models. The 13‑inch iPad Pro retails for $1,299; if component costs do not decrease, the foldable iPad could cost up to $3,900, roughly three times the price of the 13‑inch iPad Pro.
Design and Weight
- Closed form: The device resembles a MacBook, featuring an aluminum exterior and no outer display.
- Open form: When unfolded, it reaches roughly the size of a 13‑inch MacBook Air, but without a physical keyboard.
- Weight: Prototypes with the large display and aluminum chassis weigh about 3.5 lb, considerably heavier than existing iPad Pro models.
