Overview

Apple continues its gradual unveiling of new products this week with the launch of the Studio Display and an all‑new 27‑inch Studio Display XDR. The XDR model is a higher‑end option aimed at content creators, featuring a 27‑inch 5K Retina XDR mini‑LED display with over 2,000 dimming zones, up to 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness, and a wider color gamut for improved accuracy. It appears to replace the nearly seven‑year‑old 32‑inch 6K Pro XDR Display, which is no longer listed on Apple’s website.

The Studio Display XDR also introduces a 120 Hz refresh rate, addressing complaints about the 60 Hz rate of previous models, and comes standard with a tilt‑ and height‑adjustable stand (height range of 105 mm).

Studio Display XDR

Apple markets the Studio Display XDR as the “world’s best pro display” for tasks such as HDR video editing and medical imaging. Key specifications include:

  • Brightness: 1,000 nits SDR, 2,000 nits HDR
  • Contrast ratio: 1,000,000:1
  • Color gamut: 80 % Rec. 2020 coverage
  • Refresh rate: 120 Hz with Adaptive Sync support (suitable for light gaming)

Additional features:

  • 12 MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support
  • Thunderbolt 5 connectivity with a second port for downstream high‑speed accessories or daisy‑chained displays
  • Thunderbolt hub functionality
  • Up to 140 W charging via the included Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable (enough to fast‑charge a 16‑inch MacBook Pro)

Standard Studio Display

Apple also announced an updated version of the standard Studio Display. It retains the 27‑inch 5K Retina panel with up to 600 nits brightness and P3 wide‑color support, available with either standard glass or an optional nano‑texture glass ($300 extra). New enhancements include:

  • Improved 12 MP Center Stage camera with Desk View (simultaneous face and overhead desk view)
  • Studio‑quality three‑microphone array
  • Six‑speaker sound system with Spatial Audio

The display now supports Thunderbolt 5, enabling higher‑speed accessory connections and daisy‑chaining of displays. Maximum charging power is limited to 96 W, sufficient to fast‑charge a 14‑inch MacBook Pro.

Standard configuration includes a tilt‑adjustable stand; a tilt‑ and height‑adjustable stand is available for an additional $400.

Pricing and Availability

  • Studio Display XDR: Pre‑orders begin tomorrow at $3,299.
  • Standard Studio Display: Pre‑orders start on March 4 at $1,599 (nano‑texture glass and height‑adjustable stand not included).
