Apple might expand its AI wearable efforts into the world of AirPods.

New camera‑equipped AirPods

Bloomberg reported that Apple is in the final stages of testing a new AirPods model that would feature small cameras in each earbud. The earbuds would have longer stems than current AirPods but otherwise look very similar, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

“The device has entered a phase where prototypes feature a near‑final design and capabilities” after years of internal development. A firm release date has not been announced, and it’s possible the prototypes never reach market.

The cameras are not intended for photo or video capture. Gurman says they would be low‑resolution modules used to sense the environment for interacting with an AI assistant. An LED indicator is expected to light up when the cameras are active, though it’s unclear how visible it will be.

Privacy considerations

Apple has a strong privacy track record, yet embedding cameras—however low‑resolution—into earbuds raises concerns. Similar technologies have sparked controversy in the past, such as Meta’s Ray‑Ban glasses, which have been linked to unwanted recordings of strangers.

The question remains: Would you wear earbuds with a built‑in camera? The public’s reaction to earlier wearable cameras, like Google Glass, suggests many may be uneasy.

Industry context

  • OpenAI is developing an AI wearable with designer Jony Ive.
  • Motorola showcased a concept AI pendant at CES 2026.
  • Apple is rumored to be working on a wearable AI pin the size of an AirTag.
  • Meta and Google continue investing in smart glasses with cameras.

These developments indicate that major tech companies see demand for AI‑enhanced wearables, even as privacy debates intensify.
