Rumored camera‑equipped AirPods

According to the latest report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is close to finalizing AirPods that feature low‑resolution cameras on their stems. The cameras would capture modest imagery that feeds into Apple’s long‑delayed AI‑powered Siri assistant. Gurman notes that the earbuds are currently in Apple’s design validation testing (DVT) phase, with prototypes being evaluated for functionality.

The devices were originally slated to debut “as early as the first half of 2026,” but development has been delayed by Siri’s AI rollout. Gurman now expects the Siri upgrade—and possibly the camera‑enabled AirPods—to arrive in September, potentially alongside a foldable iPhone and the iPhone 18 series.

Intended functionality

  • Visual context for Siri – The earbuds would act as “eyes” for Siri, allowing users to ask questions about objects or scenes directly in front of them.
  • Object reminders – For example, the system could remind you of items you pass, such as “the eggs in the supermarket.”
  • Landmark‑based navigation – Siri could provide walking directions using visual cues from the environment, building on Apple Maps’ existing strengths for driving directions.

Privacy considerations

Even with low‑resolution imaging, the AirPods would constitute a surveillance device. Gurman reports that Apple may include an indicator to show when the cameras are active, which would be the minimum expected transparency for privacy‑focused users.

Broader AI hardware roadmap

Apple’s AI ambitions extend beyond the camera‑equipped AirPods. Gurman also mentions potential future products such as:

  • Smart glasses – Apple is reportedly testing multiple styles that could compete with Meta’s Ray‑Ban smart glasses.
  • AI pendantThe Information has previously reported that Apple is developing an AI‑focused pin.

These initiatives suggest a broader strategy to integrate AI capabilities across a range of wearable devices.
