Will Apple’s upcoming low-cost MacBook actually be worthwhile?

Apple is set to unveil its cheapest MacBook yet as early as next week. Powered by an A18 Pro chip, it will feature a 12.9‑inch Retina LCD display and a range of vibrant colors. To keep the price low, Apple is making several compromises, raising the question of whether it will offer good value compared to the MacBook Air.
Key compromises
For the most part, the budget MacBook retains the core MacBook experience: an aluminum chassis, a crisp Retina LCD display, an excellent trackpad, and long battery life. However, several areas are expected to be trimmed compared to the MacBook Air:
- 400‑nit display, no True Tone support, and no P3 color gamut
- Slower charging speeds
- Limited storage options with slower SSD speeds
- No keyboard backlight
- No N1 chip, using a cheaper MediaTek networking chip
These cuts are consistent with previous lower‑cost Apple products (e.g., the iPad Air Magic Keyboard also lacks a backlight). While the device uses an iPhone‑class A18 Pro chip instead of an M‑series processor, the A18 Pro actually matches the M1 in synthetic benchmarks, suggesting respectable performance despite the lower‑end silicon.

Will it be a good value?
The MacBook’s value will largely depend on its launch price. At $699, it may be a tough sell initially, especially when the M4 MacBook Air has been discounted to $749 (currently $949). However, the lower‑priced MacBook is likely to see price drops over time, potentially making it a solid value even against the Air, given the typical $300 MSRP gap.
If the price drops further—to $649 or $599—the device could be a “killer” deal, especially with the rumored fun color options like green, yellow, and pink. In that scenario, it might even outshine the MacBook Air in certain respects.
Apple is expected to launch the new MacBook next week, kicking off a week of announcements starting Monday, March 2nd with an in‑person media event on Wednesday, March 4th. We’ll have a clearer picture once the product is officially unveiled.
