M5 Pro and M5 Max Refresh

Apple refreshed the 14‑inch and 16‑inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max models in March 2026. These models have faster chips but retain the same design introduced in 2021. An updated design with new display technology and even faster performance is expected in late 2026 or early 2027.

OLED Touchscreen Display

The next MacBook Pro is rumored to be the first with an OLED display. iPhones have used OLED for years, and Apple introduced a larger‑screened OLED device with the M4 iPad Pro in 2024.

  • Advantages over mini‑LED: individual pixel control for deeper blacks, brighter colors, and no bloom; potential power savings; quicker response times; better viewing angles.
  • Brightness: Historically a challenge for OLED, but recent improvements have raised brightness levels, making OLED suitable for HDR content.
  • Touchscreen: Rumors suggest touch capabilities will be added, allowing the Mac to function more like an iPad while still supporting traditional mouse and keyboard input.

Design Update

  • The OLED MacBook Pro is expected to be thinner, marking a major design refresh after the 2021 redesign.
  • Screen sizes will remain 14 inches and 16 inches; the keyboard and trackpad will stay.
  • A Dynamic Island is anticipated to take up less screen space, expanding contextually based on the active app or macOS feature.

2 nm Chip

The OLED models will likely be the first to use Apple’s 2‑nanometer chip technology, expected in the upcoming M6‑series chips. TSMC says this new transistor technology will deliver improved performance and lower power consumption.

Cellular Connectivity

Rumors indicate that 5G could be added to Macs, and the OLED MacBook Pro may be the first to include cellular connectivity.

Ultra Branding

Because OLED touch displays are costly, they may be limited to the highest‑end 14‑inch and 16‑inch models, possibly under a new “Ultra” branding. The OLED M6 models could be sold alongside existing M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max models, potentially leading to a significant price increase. Apple might also refresh the entire line with M6 variants, reserving OLED for the most expensive configurations.

If you don’t need OLED or a touchscreen and prefer a lower‑cost option, waiting may not be necessary.

First‑Generation Tech Concerns

Apple’s first‑generation Macs have sometimes faced unexpected issues (e.g., the 2016 butterfly keyboard). For those worried about early‑generation problems, the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models are considered a safer bet.

Launch Date

The OLED MacBook Pro could appear as early as late 2026, but it is more likely to launch in early 2027. Ongoing chip shortages may cause Apple to delay production to build sufficient stock.
