New Ojai vehicle

Waymo has announced a new fleet of autonomous robotaxis called the Ojai. Compared with its typical Jaguar I‑PACE cars, the Ojai is described as roomier and more accessible.

Design and accessibility features

  • Elevator‑like doors, low steps, flat floors, and a seat‑integrated handle make it easier for riders to get in and out.
  • The interior is marketed as a “living room on wheels.”
  • The Ojai shares some design similarities with Waymo competitor Zoox’s carriage‑style autonomous cars.
  • Three large LED screens display routes, temperature controls, and music options. The screens include embedded braille and screen‑reader compatibility, addressing the needs of low‑vision riders — as highlighted in a recent New York Times report about blind passengers’ affinity for self‑driving cars.

Technology

The Ojai will be equipped with 6th‑generation Waymo Driver technology, which Waymo says improves performance in snowy conditions.

Rollout plan

  • Initial free rides will be offered to select riders in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.
  • Subsequent expansion is planned for Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego.
  • The Ojai will not be deployed in New York or Boston during the initial phase.

Safety record

Waymo recently suspended rides in San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta after some vehicles encountered floodwaters. Despite these incidents, the company emphasizes its safety performance:

  • Waymo’s data show that the Waymo Driver was involved in 92 % fewer serious crashes than human drivers under comparable conditions.
  • The rate of serious injury or fatal crashes is 13 times lower than that of human drivers.
