Overview

As of today, Instagram direct messages (DMs) are no longer protected by end‑to‑end encryption (E2EE). Messages you send on Instagram can now be accessed by Meta and may be shared with law‑enforcement agencies worldwide.

Why the Encryption Was Removed

  • Low adoption: Meta told The Guardian that very few users opted in to the encrypted‑messaging feature, so the company decided to discontinue it.
  • Limited rollout: The encryption option was never enabled by default and required users to activate it per conversation through a hidden setting. It was never available to all Instagram users.
  • Alternative options: Meta recommends users who need E2EE switch to WhatsApp, which still offers the feature. Other non‑Meta apps such as iMessage and Signal also provide end‑to‑end encryption.

Potential Implications

  • Data use: While Meta states that DM content is not used for targeted advertising, the removal of encryption could allow the company to analyze messages for product improvement, advertising algorithms, or training generative AI models.
  • Regulatory timing: The change comes 11 days before the Take It Down Act takes effect. The Act will require platforms to remove non‑consensual intimate imagery (including deepfakes) within 48 hours of a takedown notice. With E2EE removed, Meta will be able to access the content needed to comply.
  • Other platforms: WhatsApp and Messenger continue to provide end‑to‑end encryption for the time being.

What Instagram Users Can Do

  • Download your data: Users with existing encrypted chats can follow Instagram’s instructions to download any media or messages they wish to keep.
  • Switch to a secure app: Consider moving private conversations to WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage, or another service that offers end‑to‑end encryption by default.
