Power Options

One way to power the Vantrue E1 is to buy an optional $25 hardwire kit from Vantrue, which connects the device directly to your fuse box. The camera draws about 25–35 mA in parking mode (roughly 3–4 W on a home outlet), so a hard‑wired setup will eventually drain the car’s battery. The draw isn’t huge, and a healthy battery can tolerate it for days or even weeks, but it’s still a risk.

If you’d rather avoid any battery drain while parked, skip the hardwire kit and use a good power bank instead. A $48 portable bank from Anker should provide roughly a week of continuous operation without ever touching the car’s battery.

Limitations and Faults

For such a compact device, the Vantrue offers a real‑time screen. It’s mainly useful for checking framing when you first mount the cam on the windshield; the screen is busy with information and its resolution is lower than the recorded video.

When reviewing footage, you’ll use the phone app, but the on‑camera screen can still be handy for manually adjusting settings. Controlling the phone via the camera’s interface can feel fiddly and irritating, so most users prefer connecting the camera to the phone directly to toggle settings.

Through the app you can:

  • Track mileage
  • Toggle GPS tracking
  • Set frame rate and resolution
  • Choose between high‑dynamic‑range (HDR) mode or PlatePix (useful in low light)

The Vantrue E1 is a single‑camera unit. Vantrue also offers more elaborate, multi‑camera systems, such as the Nexus 4 Pro with a lower‑resolution front‑cabin and rear cam or a 4‑channel N5 that adds a rear‑cabin channel for extensive coverage, though at the cost of some image resolution.

PlatePix helps capture license plates but reduces overall contrast, especially at night. It’s a trade‑off between clearer night footage and better plate detail.
