Update
Google cancels today’s Android 17 Beta 1 release
Android Canary Overview
Android Canary was introduced in June as a way for Google to test “cutting‑edge builds” with “pre‑release Android APIs and potential upcoming behavior changes.” Replacing Developer Previews, Google touts three benefits:
- Faster Access: Features and APIs land in Canary as soon as they pass internal testing.
- Better Stability: Early “battle‑testing” results in a more polished Beta experience.
- Easier Testing: OTA updates (no manual flashing) and a separate channel that integrates with CI workflows.
Android 17 Features
Adaptive Apps
Android 17 continues work on adaptive apps that span the full width of large‑screen devices without letterboxing. The developer opt‑out from the previous year has been removed for apps targeting API level 37 (does not apply to games).
Performance
Improvements aim to reduce missed frames, lower garbage‑collection CPU costs, apply more aggressive optimizations, and cut notification memory usage.
Media & Camera
- Seamless transitions between camera use cases and modes to avoid glitches or freezes.
- New loudness‑management API for a consistent listening experience across apps and hardware.
Developer Resources
