Apple Wallet Car Key Overview

In 2020, Apple added a digital car key feature to its Wallet app, letting users lock, unlock, and start a compatible vehicle with an iPhone or Apple Watch. The feature is currently offered by select automakers—including Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes‑Benz, and Volvo—and Toyota is now rolling it out as well.

Toyota Rav4 Car Key Feature

Compatibility

  • 2026 Toyota RAV4 – select trims in the United States support the Apple Wallet car key, according to a Reddit post.
  • No confirmation yet for other 2026 Toyota models.

Technical Implementation

Toyota uses Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, enabling passive entry: simply approach the vehicle, and the door will unlock and the engine start with your iPhone in your pocket or Apple Watch on your wrist.

  • Required devices: iPhone 11 or newer (excluding iPhone SE 2, iPhone SE 3, and iPhone 16e) or Apple Watch Series 6 or newer.

Subscription Requirement

  • The feature appears to require a Toyota Remote Connect subscription, starting at $15 per month.
  • A free one‑year Remote Connect trial is included with the purchase of a new Toyota vehicle.

Apple’s Vehicle List

Apple maintains a web page with a list of vehicle models that support iPhone car keys. The list is updated infrequently and currently omits some newer additions, as noted in a MacRumors article.

Background

A few months ago, MacRumors first reported that Toyota was planning to offer Apple Wallet car keys (source), so this rollout was expected.
