Background

The Stop Killing Games campaign began as a reaction to Ubisoft’s delisting of The Crew from players’ libraries, raising concerns about publishers’ ability to remove games that consumers have already purchased. After gathering more than a million signatures last year, the movement’s leadership began exploring next steps.

NGO Plans

In a YouTube video, campaign creator Ross Scott explained that organizers plan to establish two non‑governmental organizations—one for the European Union and another for the United States. These NGOs would enable “long‑term counter lobbying” when publishers end support for certain video games.

“Let me start off by saying I think we’re going to win this, namely the problem of publishers destroying video games that you’ve already paid for,” Scott said.

The NGOs aim to:

  • Codify the original Stop Killing Games petition into EU law.
  • Conduct watchdog actions, such as creating a system for reporting publishers that revoke access to purchased games.

Scott indicated that the campaign leadership will meet with the European Commission soon and is working on a 500‑page legal paper that outlines controversial industry practices.

Recent Developments

Following the campaign’s pressure, Ubisoft updated The Crew 2 with an offline mode, indicating a shift in the publisher’s stance.
