TL;DR
- T‑Mobile CEO Srinivasan Gopalan dismissed the possibility of an MVNO partnership with Starlink.
- He said a Starlink MVNO wouldn’t align with T‑Mobile’s philosophy.
- Gopalan added that T‑Mobile’s T‑Satellite service is being used far less often than originally envisioned.
Background
T‑Mobile teamed up with Starlink for its T‑Satellite service, which brings satellite connectivity to any modern smartphone. The company later announced a new 5G business plan that uses Starlink for backup internet connectivity.
The prospect of a Starlink MVNO has been a topic of speculation, especially after Starlink filed trademarks for Starlink Mobile and T‑Mobile acquired terrestrial bandwidth from Boost Mobile’s parent company.
CEO Comments on MVNOs
During the Q1 2026 earnings call, T‑Mobile CEO Srinivasan Gopalan said:
“On MVNOs, we’ve got a very clear philosophy or approach to MVNOs. MVNOs make sense for us when it’s a TAM [total addressable market] expansion. A TAM expansion happens because it’s a new customer base that we couldn’t target earlier. It’s a new channel. I mean an example of this is what we did with cable focused on SMB [small and medium‑sized businesses]. It’s not obvious to me how an MVNO with SpaceX or any other LEO operator fulfills those conditions.”
In other words, T‑Mobile does not see a Starlink MVNO as a market‑expanding opportunity.
Service Usage Update
Gopalan also noted that the T‑Satellite service is seeing “a lot less usage” than the company originally envisioned, though he praised it as a “great complementary product.” Launched almost a year ago, T‑Satellite offers emergency SOS, texting, voice chat, and limited data connectivity without requiring dedicated hardware—distinguishing it from most satellite services.
Outlook
While a Starlink mobile service could still emerge, T‑Mobile appears unlikely to participate in an MVNO arrangement based on the CEO’s statements. The reduced usage of T‑Satellite may influence future collaborations between the two companies.
