Introduction
Samsung introduced per‑app volume controls on its phones in 2019. The feature, called Separate App Sound, is accessed through the Sound Assistant app, which is part of the Good Lock suite.
Survey Results
A recent poll asked readers whether they were aware of Separate App Sound.
- ~75 % of respondents had never heard of the option.
- ~25 % knew about it and some cited it as a key reason for staying with Galaxy devices.
Why the Feature Is Hidden
Separate App Sound isn’t built into the core One UI; you must install the Sound Assistant app from Good Lock. Many users, including Samsung veteran p2kpradeep, feel the feature should be more prominently marketed.

“This is the main reason I’m still with Samsung. I use this all the time. However, if Samsung doesn’t upgrade the battery on the Z8, I’m going to buy another brand.”

“Been using this feature via ‘Sound Assistant’ for YEARS. One of the main reasons I have stuck to Samsung all these years. I love playing games and running with my own music.”
Adoption by Other Brands
- Xiaomi added per‑app volume controls in 2020.
- OnePlus, OPPO, vivo, and realme have implemented similar options in recent years.
Switching to these manufacturers won’t mean losing the feature.
Looking Ahead
It would be great to see per‑app volume controls become standard on other Android devices. Google and Motorola are among the brands that could adopt the feature, and it was listed as one of the top features desired for Android 16 back in 2024.
