Sonos restores Android media player and lockscreen controls

Alongside the debut of its new speakers, Sonos has updated its Android app to finally revive support for the system’s built‑in media player and lockscreen controls, as well as volume controls using the phone’s physical buttons.

Media apps of all sorts almost universally support Android’s media playback controls, which include notification/Quick Settings and lockscreen controls. The lack of this support in the Sonos app has been a source of frustration for years after it was removed.

What’s new in the update

  • The app now shows the currently‑playing media and indicates which speakers or groups are being used for output.
  • Volume controls work as expected for casting media, even when the app isn’t open, and can be adjusted with the phone’s hardware buttons.
  • The changes are available to all Android users via the Play Store.

Sonos confirmed that, as of this week, the latest Android app update has widely revived support for the platform’s media player controls. Users began noticing the changes over the past week, and the update is now broadly available. You can check for the latest version in the Play Store if you don’t see the new behavior yet: Sonos Android app on Google Play.

Timing and compatibility

The update arrives just as Sonos rolls out its latest “Play” portable speaker and the Era 100 SL, a more affordable $189 home speaker.
