Smart AirPods cameras could be a killer feature – if they work | Two shares AirPods Pro on a reflective surface

Smart AirPods cameras

It’s been more than two years since we first started hearing reports about AirPods with cameras, and the latest information suggests we may be getting relatively close to a launch.

There have been conflicting reports about the purpose of the cameras, but Bloomberg now clearly indicates that they’re intended to support Apple Intelligence features.

The first reports of AirPods with cameras date back to 2024. At that time, it was presented as something Apple was exploring, though subsequent reports have suggested it’s a definite plan.

There hasn’t yet been a consensus on the purpose of these cameras. Three possibilities have been raised:

  • Health sensors (e.g., an infrared camera to measure heartbeat)
  • Recognition of hand gestures
  • Support for Apple Intelligence features, such as visual intelligence on the iPhone

The latest Bloomberg report points directly to the third option.

The idea is to let users ask questions about an item they’re looking at. For instance, they could be facing food ingredients and ask what they should cook for dinner. This is similar to the experience of uploading photos to AI services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or the iPhone’s own Visual Intelligence function.

This could be a killer feature

Apple has consistently tried to give its in‑ear headphones unique selling points over third‑party alternatives, notably with a slicker pairing process and improved audio quality in the AirPods Pro.

If the camera feature works well, it could be the reason many users switch to AirPods despite the current audio quality debate.

Navigation features cited in the Bloomberg piece illustrate a potential benefit. Traditional turn‑by‑turn directions (“In 300 feet, turn left”) are less natural than human‑like instructions (“Turn left immediately after the gas station”). Cameras could enable Apple Maps to provide more intuitive, context‑aware directions.

Context‑aware reminders

A second intriguing possibility is that the device could give the wearer reminders based on what the camera sees:

  • Open a shopping list in the Notes app when the AirPods detect that the wearer has entered a grocery store.
  • Surface a book purchase reminder from a third‑party app when approaching a bookstore.
  • Alert the user about an upcoming oil change when the camera sees a service center, and only if the calendar shows time for the stop.

If it works …

There are countless examples of how useful such reminder features could be, and many users might be willing to trade a bit of audio fidelity for them. However, given the rollout of Apple Intelligence features to date, it’s reasonable to be skeptical about how realistic these ideas are in the near term. We may see a few token features at launch, but a comprehensive set of visual‑intelligence‑driven reminders within the next year or two would be surprising.

What’s your view? Are you excited by the possibilities, or do you share the skepticism? Let us know in the comments.
