TL;DR
- It’s been claimed the Galaxy S28 Ultra will come with a 10‑bit display.
- Leaker Ice Universe said before the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s launch that this year’s phone would make that upgrade, but it did not.
Samsung Galaxy S26 series and the 10‑bit expectation
The Samsung Galaxy S26 series launched last month. They’re minor upgrades over the Galaxy S25, with the most noteworthy change being the S26 Ultra’s surprisingly controversial new Privacy Display.
There was also anticipation that the S26 Ultra would feature a 10‑bit display. Leaker Ice Universe claimed in January that a 10‑bit screen on the Galaxy S26 Ultra was “confirmed”, but the phone launched with the same 8‑bit color depth as the other S26 models.
CID’s claim about the Galaxy S28 Ultra
Industry observer CID tweeted that the Galaxy S28 Ultra will launch with a 10‑bit panel, implying the S27 series will also miss the upgrade.
“Galaxy S28 Ultra will finally be 10‑bit.”
The post provides no further details, so the information should be taken with a grain of salt. Even if Samsung is planning a 10‑bit panel for the S28 Ultra, plans can change before production.
What is a 10‑bit display?
An 8‑bit display panel (like those used in the Galaxy S26 series) can display 16.7 million discrete colors, whereas a 10‑bit panel can show more than a billion colors. The difference is subtle under most conditions, but 10‑bit media played on a 10‑bit display appears more lifelike, especially in gradients where color transitions are smoother.
Next‑generation Privacy Display
Samsung is showcasing its next‑generation Privacy Display technology at MWC this week. The improved version will allow phones to obscure only portions of their displays (e.g., making notifications hard to read from an angle). Samsung says this version will debut on a future device generation—potentially coinciding with the 10‑bit displays CID forecasts for 2028.
