Rivian is rolling out a new companion app that lets owners control key vehicle functions directly from their Apple Watch, eliminating the need to pull out a phone.
Apple Watch Companion App
- Basic controls: lock/unlock doors, vent windows, and trigger the vehicle alarm.
- Advanced functions: use the watch’s digital crown to set a target state of charge or adjust interior temperature.
- Quick controls: users can select up to four frequently used actions for one‑tap access.
Compatibility
- First‑generation R1T trucks and R1S SUVs: can lock or unlock the vehicle by opening the app and tapping the lock icon on the watch.
- Second‑generation R1 models: will unlock automatically as the driver approaches, provided a digital key is set up.
The integration is part of a broader update to the vehicle software system that was released on Thursday.
Vehicle Software Update
The latest software rollout focuses on performance and accessibility enhancements:
- Kneel mode: lowers the vehicle an additional inch beyond the previous low setting, improving ground clearance for off‑road situations.
- Drive‑mode toggling: allows drivers to switch between different drive modes without disengaging the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).
- Cold‑weather indicator: adds a blue tint to the battery graphic on the vehicle’s digital screen, showing how much energy is being used for heating.
Rivian’s Software Partnerships
Rivian’s software has become a central product for both consumers and partners. In 2024, Rivian and Volkswagen formed a $5.8 billion technology joint venture that will see Volkswagen invest in Rivian through 2027, contingent on meeting specific milestones. Software from this venture is slated for integration into future VW Group vehicles.
