New Lifetime Plex Pass Pricing
Effective July 1 at 12:01 am UTC (June 30 at 8:01 pm ET), a new Lifetime Plex Pass will cost $750, three times the current price of $250. The increase does not affect existing Lifetime Plex Pass holders.
A Lifetime Plex Pass enables you to:
- Stream from your own Plex Media Server to devices on your network
- Stream remotely from the server
- Allow others to stream remotely from your server
Historical Pricing
- 2012 – Launched at $75
- 2014 – Raised to $150; Plex explained the change in a blog post citing sustainability concerns.
- 2014–2025 – Priced at $120 for several years
- March 2025 – Increased to $250, as reported by Ars Technica (link).
Plex’s Rationale
In an email and a blog post announcing the change, Plex stated that the Lifetime Pass was originally offered because many customers preferred a higher one‑time fee for dependable software. However, recurring subscriptions better support long‑term development. The company’s message:
“We’ve considered eliminating the Lifetime Plex Pass in the past, given that recurring subscriptions help us sustain long‑term development, but we know it’s still a valuable option for many in our community. So instead of retiring it, we’re keeping it available at a price that reflects the real, ongoing value of the software we’re committed to building and maintaining for years to come.”
The 200 % price hike aligns with Plex’s broader shift toward profitability, as discussed in a TechCrunch article. Notably, Plex did not announce any price changes for its monthly or annual subscription tiers.
Impact on Users
Plex’s blog further explained:
“Over the years, as our software and product has evolved, the breadth of features and benefits included with your Plex Pass has expanded. This increase ensures we can continue to invest resources into building and maintaining the Plex personal media software, while continuing to offer a Lifetime option.”
With annual subscriptions currently at $70, a user would need 11 years of annual payments to equal the $750 lifetime cost, indicating Plex’s preference for recurring revenue over one‑time purchases.
