Pixel Now Playing Album Art Rollout Feature

TL;DR

  • Some Pixel phones now show album art for detected songs when you tap the Now Playing lock‑screen interface.
  • The expandable view appears to be rolling out with the Android 16 QPR3 update, though the exact rollout scope is unclear.
  • Occasionally a track loads a blank white background instead of the album artwork.

Updated visual experience

Pixel phones have long included the Now Playing feature, which continuously listens for nearby music and identifies tracks on the lock screen—essentially an always‑on Shazam. With the Android 16 QPR3 update, Google is rolling out a refreshed version that adds album art to the lock‑screen view.

When a song is detected, the familiar transparent text card appears with the track title and artist. Tapping this card expands it into a full Now Playing bar that displays the album artwork for the identified track. In testing, the panel first shows a plain white background before the artwork loads a moment later.

Loading inconsistencies

The loading behavior isn’t fully consistent yet. While many tracks eventually display their album art, some remain stuck with a white background. Below is an example of a track that fails to load its artwork.

Earlier experimentation

The lock‑screen artwork addition has been in development for some time. In July 2025, Android Authority reported that Google was experimenting with the feature behind the scenes, where tapping the lock‑screen card would expand to reveal album art instead of opening the Now Playing history page:

Standalone Now Playing app

The rollout follows Google’s launch of the Now Playing feature as a standalone app on the Play Store, rather than being bundled only within Android System Intelligence:

The underlying music recognition remains unchanged, but the UI and tools continue to evolve as Google refines one of Pixel’s most distinctive features.
