Perplexity pulls back from advertising

Perplexity was one of the first AI services to experiment with ads in 2024, displaying sponsored answers beneath the chatbot’s responses. The company phased out that approach last year and now says it has no plans to re‑introduce ads, according to the Financial Times.

“A user needs to believe this is the best possible answer, to keep using the product and be willing to pay for it,” a Perplexity executive told the publication.

Industry context

  • OpenAI began showing ads to ChatGPT users with free accounts or low‑cost “Go” subscriptions earlier this month. OpenAI insists that ads will not influence ChatGPT’s answers and that advertisers will not receive content from user conversations.

  • Anthropic, the maker of Claude, mocked OpenAI’s ad decision and confirmed it has no plans to add ads. The company argues that advertising would conflict with its mission to provide a helpful assistant for work and deep thinking, and that users should not have to wonder whether the AI is subtly steering conversations toward monetizable topics.

  • Google incorporates advertising in its AI‑enhanced search results and AI Overviews summaries, but it has not yet introduced ads into its Gemini chatbot.

Revenue challenges for AI companies

Ad strategies are one of several avenues AI firms are exploring to generate revenue, reassure investors, and offset the heavy costs of training and operating large language models. Despite escalating expenses, many companies still lack consistent profitability, making sustainable monetization a critical focus.
