Funding round
OpenAI announced a funding round of $110 billion, one of the largest investment rounds in Silicon Valley history. The round includes:
- Amazon – $50 billion
- NVIDIA – $30 billion
- SoftBank – $30 billion
The investment brings OpenAI’s valuation to $730 billion.
“We’re super excited about this deal,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told CNBC. “AI is going to happen everywhere.”
Strategic partnerships
Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- AWS will run OpenAI models for enterprise customers to “build generative AI applications and agents at production scale.”
- AWS is named the exclusive third‑party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, an agentic enterprise platform.
- OpenAI will consume 2 GW of Amazon’s Trainium capacity, Amazon’s custom AI training accelerator.
NVIDIA
- OpenAI will consume 2 GW of training capacity on NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin systems.
- An additional 3 GW of computing resources (likely GPUs) will be used for specific AI inference tasks.
Investment terms
Amazon’s $50 billion investment will be staggered:
- Initial tranche: $15 billion
- Remaining tranche: $35 billion, released when certain conditions are met.
One reported condition is that OpenAI achieves artificial general intelligence (AGI)—the point at which AI reaches or surpasses human‑level abilities.
AGI outlook
- Some analysts predict AGI could emerge later this year; others consider it unlikely.
- Sam Altman previously indicated AGI might arrive in 2025 but has since expressed caution about the term.
Financial outlook
- 2024 loss: ~ $5 billion
- 2025 projected loss: ~ $8 billion
- 2026 forecasted loss: $14 billion
Despite the projected losses, OpenAI projects $100 billion in revenue by 2029.
