My favorite Circle to Search feature is one that Google doesn’t advertise

While Google’s Circle to Search is a handy tool in theory, the results vary significantly in practice. Sometimes the answers are spot‑on; other times they’re wildly inconsistent. As a result, I rarely use Circle to Search—except for one very handy feature that I rely on daily.

What do you use Circle to Search for?

Circle to Search’s image recognition doesn’t always work for me

Apple Visual Intelligence vs Circle to Search Google suit

Circle to Search is generally good at identifying products that are available online, but its performance with other items is mixed. Being in a non‑Western market may contribute to the inconsistency, as the training data for large language models tends to skew toward the US, Europe, and other Western regions.

I’ve tried using it to identify plants, insects, phone models, and even my cat’s breed. More often than not, it misidentifies the subject:

  • Plants in my garden are frequently labeled as species from unrelated regions.
  • When I asked it to identify a bug on a plant, it gave different answers each time—once calling them “zombie ants.” The correct identification (lantana bugs) came from a local website.
  • My HONOR 400 Pro was mistakenly identified as an iPhone, leading some readers to think I was using an Apple device.
  • My cat’s partially pinnectomized ears were labeled as a Scottish Fold, even though the facial structure tells a different story.

Because of these accuracy issues, I don’t rely on Circle to Search for image recognition.

However, one feature has been undeniably useful

Selecting text in WhatsApp using Circle to Search

Circle to Search is currently the easiest way to copy text in apps that don’t allow selective copying, such as WhatsApp and Slack, which only let you copy an entire message. By holding the home button to activate Circle to Search, I can highlight individual pieces of text and copy them to the clipboard.

Real‑world example

In a local Pokémon Go community group, members share in‑game names and friend codes. WhatsApp doesn’t let you copy those tags directly—tapping them opens the person’s profile. With Circle to Search enabled, a simple tap selects the text, allowing me to copy each friend code effortlessly.

Other use cases

  • Selecting text in search‑engine previews that are normally unselectable.
  • Copying content from social‑media posts, task‑list apps, and more.
  • Extracting text from images (on‑demand OCR).

Because Circle to Search is linked to a home‑button shortcut on Android, activation is instantaneous. It’s available on most new Android phones, so even non‑Pixel owners can benefit. While Pixel devices already offer text selection via the app‑switcher UI, that feature isn’t present on other Android devices.

Unlike image identification, this OCR capability is reliable—so far I haven’t encountered a misread. Its simplicity and consistency make it the feature I actually use the most.
