Overview

Mercedes‑AMG is known for its performance sedans like the GT63 SE Performance with a complex 4.0‑liter V8 biturbo hybrid powertrain. The new GT 4‑Door Coupé takes a completely different route: a 1,153 hp, purely electric beast built on the 800‑volt AMG.EA platform.

Powertrain

  • Three new axial‑flux motors
    • Front motor – 3.5 inches thick, redlines > 15,000 rpm, used for extra performance and regenerative braking.
    • Two rear motors – each ~3.2 inches high, paired with a single‑speed transmission, redline > 13,000 rpm.
  • Combined powertrain weight: 309 lb.

The GT55 variant delivers 805 hp and 1,328 lb‑ft of torque, while the GT63 pushes 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb‑ft. The GT63 accelerates from 0‑60 mph in 2.0 seconds, beating the Porsche Taycan Turbo S by 0.3 seconds. An artificial sound system can emulate an AMG V8, complete with gear‑change cues.

Battery and Charging

  • 106 kWh battery using long (4 + inch) cylindrical cells developed with Mercedes‑AMG’s Formula 1 program.
  • Energy density: 298 Wh/kg.
  • Non‑conductive oil cooling system maintains uniform cell temperature.
  • Operates at 800 V / up to 800 A, enabling > 600 kW charging (10 % → 80 % in ~11 minutes).

Both GT55 and GT63 are rated for 370–470 miles on the WLTP cycle (≈ 300 miles EPA).

Performance & Handling

  • Multilink front and rear suspensions with standard air suspension, electronic dampers, and AMG’s Active Ride Control.
  • Regenerative braking for everyday driving; carbon‑ceramic front discs and steel rear rotors provide strong stopping power for the 5,400 lb vehicle.

Exterior Design

  • Aerodynamic shape with Cd 0.22.
  • Bulgy fenders, panoramic glass roof, and sleek strakes along the hood and sides.
  • Length is about 5 inches longer than the Taycan.
  • Front running lights feature the three‑pointed Mercedes star; a large grille (mostly cosmetic) channels air for battery cooling via louvers.
  • Six rear taillights display the Mercedes logo.

Interior & Technology

  • Sport‑focused cabin with bolstered seats and a large central touchscreen, plus a dedicated front‑passenger display.
  • Spacious passenger area thanks to the battery layout and vehicle length.
  • Seven drive modes, nine traction‑control settings, and a warm‑up feature that alerts when tires and motors reach optimal temperature.
  • Track‑performance panel provides real‑time stats.

Availability & Pricing

  • 2027 Mercedes‑AMG GT55 4‑Door Coupe slated for release later this year.
  • Higher‑performance GT63 version expected to go on sale in 2027.
  • Pricing has not been disclosed; given its performance relative to the Porsche Taycan Turbo S (which exceeds $200,000), the GT63 is likely to be priced in a similar range.
