What is an AI Hallucination?

An AI hallucination occurs when a language model generates information that is fluent and coherent but factually incorrect or entirely fabricated, often presented with high confidence.

Measuring AI Hallucinations

I built a playground for measuring AI hallucinations that systematically evaluates when models generate factually incorrect information, how different prompts influence hallucination rates, and what interventions can reduce these fabrications. The framework uses a mock model by default, so anyone can explore it without needing API access, though it also supports real LLMs (e.g., Anthropic Claude) for deeper experiments.

What I Learned

Fluency Masks Fabrication

The model can produce incredibly plausible‑sounding answers to impossible questions, inventing details with complete narrative coherence and no hesitation.

Prompting Helps, but Doesn’t Solve It

Asking the model to verify its answers or admit uncertainty reduces hallucinations, yet it does not eliminate them. Even with careful prompting, some fabrications slip through.

Small Changes, Big Differences

Tiny variations in phrasing can flip the model from truthful to hallucinatory. This fragility highlights the importance of prompt engineering for AI safety.
