Overview

Lenovo unveiled the AI Workmate Concept at MWC 2026, a proof‑of‑concept robot designed to streamline office tasks and collaboration. Powered by an Intel Core Ultra processor, 64 GB of memory, and a built‑in pico projector, the device features an LCD “face” and supports voice commands, on‑device AI processing, and gesture control.

Key Features

  • Voice, writing, and gesture input with on‑device AI.
  • Ability to scan and summarize documents (both digital and physical).
  • Assistance with creating PowerPoint presentations (though results should be reviewed).
  • Articulated head housing a projector, cameras, and LCD screen, allowing projection of images or documents onto a desk or nearby wall.
  • Two 5‑megapixel downward‑facing cameras for scanning paper documents.

Demonstration

During the demo, the robot’s 3.4‑inch 480 × 480 screen displayed only the bot’s eyes and facial expressions. It used visual cues such as a moustache‑styled “sip coffee” animation while listening, a floating hand gesture to request a command repeat, and a twinkling effect when processing complex tasks.

A spokesperson asked the Workmate to create a postcard. The robot projected a Lenovo‑branded image of Barcelona onto the desk, the paper was placed underneath, signed, and then scanned by the robot’s cameras before being sent to a nearby printer. This workflow hints at potential use cases for digital document signing and annotation directly from the desk.

Considerations

  • The robot’s chatty personality may add unwanted noise to quiet office environments.
  • Lenovo positions the concept as an exploration of “spatial and physical AI experiences” that integrate seamlessly into professional settings, but future iterations may need a quieter, text‑based interaction mode.

AI Work Companion Concept

Lenovo also showcased a separate device called the AI Work Companion Concept. Unlike the robot, this is a desk‑clock‑style device with:

  • A solid dial on top and programmable buttons.
  • A largely display‑driven front that can show calendars, task lists, and other work‑centric dashboards.
  • USB‑C power input, wireless data connectivity, and hub functionality for charging accessories.

AI‑Powered Features

  • Thought Bubble: syncs a user’s tasks and schedule across devices, generating a daily action plan and suggesting break times.
  • Monitors screen time to help manage burnout.
  • Provides “playful interactions,” including an end‑of‑week celebration report summarizing completed tasks.

While less futuristic than the robot, the Work Companion offers practical AI assistance in a compact form factor.
